A Pride of lions has re-emerged in Lake Mburo National Park after the last one died in 2004 due to poisoning by pastoralists because they were preying on livestock and food crops. However, in November 2008, they reappeared in the park and since then, staff and visitors have sighted them several times.
These sighting go as far back as February 2009, when one big male was sighted by UWA staff, at Mantana junction, In March and April 2009, one big male was sighted by visitors on a nature walk and also by other visitors at Arcadia Cottages’ parking yard.
In May the same year, one male was sighted by a tour guide near lakeside campsite and has been sighted by several staff at Warukiri valley at night.
In March and April 2010, one female with two curbs were seen at Ruroko track by a community person who came and reported to the park headquarters at Rwonyo.
According to Mr. Masereka Johnson, the chief Warden of lake Mburo National Park, the management uses a sound system to detect the presence of these lions in the park. To date, we are certain of a lion, lioness and two curbs living in the park. He says; ‘The sound system is used to alert management of their location and soon we intend to use the radio collaring method to regulate their movement and maintain their presence inside the park through continuous tracking.’
Although they are shy and are not seen easily during the day, Mr. Masereka assures visitors to the park that there are high chances of catching a glimpse of these lions when in the park basing on reports by our staff and other visitors that have sighted them.
